SPING NEWSLETTER for HOA 2022
After a very wet Winter, almost no harvest in Autumn, we are Preparing for olive harvest 2023. This is to bring members up to date with our calendar the year
Firstly….CONGRATULATIONS to Adina, and Sue Turner, for their Impressive medal tally at the Sydney Fine Food Show.
1 Gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze.
Our Own Hunter Valley show is coming soon, judging is on Saturday September 24th, and show night with presentations will be October 6th at Tintilla Estate. Despite a very poor harvest we have had 66 entries and are very pleased, especially as some of these are from new members, who will learn a lot and be inspired by the judges’ comments.
BEWARE…as warned by Prof Robert Spooner Hart at our last grove meeting, and again at Ryalstone, Lace bug, dormant through Winter, are being seen again. At the recent committee meeting it was decided not to have another field meeting on this. All information can be found on the AOA website under OLIVEBIZ, available to all growers, whether AOA members or not. See below for attachment on Lace bug control info sheet.
Instead of a field meeting, by popular request, our chief judge, Stephen Mitchell, will be running an Olive Marketing day, with strong emphasis on tasting, and other tips on knowing and selling our product.. This will be in mid November, and advertised shortly.
There will be another pre-harvest Field Day, probably early February. This will be to assess the 2023 harvest, and carrying on from The tremendous work done last year by Peter Herborn and his Committee to look at the liaison needed between grower, harvester and oil mill, with the improved facilities available.
Regards
Marie Kearns
President Hunter Olive Association
